The z score indicates the direction of the association (+ means the allele was overtransmitted = risk and – means undertransmitted = protection with respect to asthma affection; for continuous traits + indicates the allele confers higher trait values and – indicates the allele confers lower trait values). The z score is a measure of transmission equilibrium i.e. the deviation from the number of times an allele was transmitted to affected offspring and the number of times it should be transmitted under the null hypothesis of no association, no linkage.
